Is unemployment insurance missing vulnerable workers?

Among laid-off workers with the lowest incomes, those who receive unemployment insurance tend to have much higher savings than those who don’t, researchers found.

Some questions triggered by this finding

After a slow start, advance notice of layoffs to workers picked up following WARN Act passage

Advance layoff notices to workers more than doubled in the years following enactment of federal legislation requiring such notices.

DAY IN THE LIFE

Day in life TN E

Editor's note: Our subscribers asked for more information about the people of the Federal Reserve, so we offer this feature: Day in the Life.

Meet Tim Nelson, a senior officer in the Cleveland Fed’s Law Enforcement Unit (LEU). Tim is one of the Bank’s fitness coordinators and helps run the day-to-day operations of its Fitness Center. As you might expect, he is passionate about the health and wellness of others. When someone is embarking on a new fitness journey, he advises, “take it slow, and set realistic goals to build your confidence.”

What is a typical workday for you?

I arrive to work, change into my uniform, and get my firearm from the armory. After roll call, my fellow officers and I head out to our first scheduled post. We rotate posts throughout the day to help keep us alert and at the ready. Our day changes depending on the situations we encounter, so there is no typical day as an LEU officer.

What do you find rewarding or enjoyable about your job?

I value the relationships I have made. I enjoy meeting new people and interacting with our employees. As an LEU officer, I have undergone a lot of training, much of which I thankfully don’t have to use often. Knowing I can perform if needed is rewarding and reassuring.

How do you spend your time outside of the Bank?

When I am not at work, I like to go to concerts, participate in races, or try new restaurants in the area. I also work with an animal rescue and foster dogs. My girlfriend and I usually have anywhere from three to five dogs in our house at any given time.

What is your greatest accomplishment?

One of my greatest accomplishments was an overnight 12-hour GORUCK Tough event. As a group, we rucked (walked with weight on our backs) and carried over 800 pounds of sandbags and ammo cans through a 15-mile course with stops for group exercise along the way. The event was led by a former Navy SEAL and honored the military personnel who died in Operation Red Wings. It was the hardest endurance event I have participated in—very humbling.
